As a teenager, he attended Lady Bird Johnson High but left after freshman year and was homeschooled at his grandmother's home.
Mahone created a YouTube channel in 2010 where he began to post videos. By 2011 he had gathered a following and began posting song covers. On Valentines Day 2012 he independently released his debut single 11:11 on iTunes. Only a few months later on June 4, his debut EP, Extended Play was released as a Japan-only release. Say Somethin was released worldwide as his second single the next day. Mahone officially signed to Chase/Republic Records on August 28. He became the new official "Teen Ambassador" for Lil Wayne's Trukfit clothing line in November. Say You're Just a Friend featuring American rapper, Flo Rida was released on December 3, 2012 and later on released a piano version that better showed his voice.
In June 2013, What About Love was released that went on to win the "Artists to Watch" award at MTV Video Music Awards. Mahone featured in Becky G's Magik 2.0 song from The Smurfs 2 soundtrack. Banga Banga was released on November 13. Mmm Yeah was released as the lead single of The Secret EP on January 27, 2014. His second EP was released on May 27.
