The original name of the album was going to be Jesus Christ Supermarket. It was changed after Billie Joe Armstrong asked the cover artist, Winston Smith, how he managed to complete the intricate collage in such a small amount of time. He answered: "It's easy for me. I am an insomniac." Armstrong then decided to change the name and has said that the title comes from his own insomnia, which is caused by waking up at night from his son, Joey screaming.
The collage that Smith did for the cover of the album is called "God Told Me to Skin You Alive" and is a reference to I Kill Children by Dead Kennedy. The collage contains an image that was featured in the inside cover art of Dead Kennedy's second album, Plastic Surgery Disasters. Smith knew Green Day's drummer, Tré Cool and told him he should call him if he ever needed album artwork.
Geek Stink Breath was released as the lead single to Insomniac on September 25, 1995. It was successful in both Top 40 and rock radio stations, peaking at number twenty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay.
Stuck with Me was released as the second single of the album. The title was originally meant to become a B-side of the original song, but something went wrong with the printing of the album cover and the two songs accidentally switched names. The B-side was later named Do Da Da and is featured on Green Day's 2002 album, Shenanigans.
Tracks ten and eleven on Insomniac were released together as the third single of the album called, Brain Stew/Jaded.
Walking Contradiction was released as the last single on August 20, 1996. 86 was released as a promotional single in Spain and Germany.
Insomniac reached number two in the United States and earned double platinum. It did not do as well as its predecessor, Dookie because of its more abrasive sound and darker lyrics, but it sold 2,000,000 units in the United States and 7,000,000 around the world as of August 2006. It is Green Day's third most successful album after Dookie and American Idiot.
