Liam James Payne was born on August 29, 1993 to Geoff Payne and Karen Payne in Wolverhampton, U.K. His father was a fitter and mother a nursery nurse. He is the younger brother to Nicola and Ruth Payne. Payne had to regular visits and tests done in the hospital until he was age four as doctors recognized that one of his kidneys was scarred and dysfunctional. To manage the pain, he received thirty-two injections every morning and night as a child.
Payne was heavily involved in sports and joined the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club as a student to pursue a running career. After failing to make it to the English National Team for the 2012 Olympic Games, he was placed on the reserves list. Due to bulling in secondary school, Payne took up boxing lessons when he was twelve. He studied music technology at Wolverhampton College's Paget Road campus after completing eleven GCSEs at St Peter's Collegiate School.
Payne originally auditioned on The X Factor in 2008 when he was only fourteen years old and performed Frank Sinatra's Fly Me To The Moon. He was cut during the judges' houses, but was encouraged by Simon Cowell to come back to years later. Payne did audition again in 2010 with Michael Bublé's version of Cry Me a River. He failed to move on to the Boys category at judges' house along with four others. Nicole Scherzinger then suggested to put them together to form a five-piece boy band and qualify for the Groups category. The group got together and were given two weeks to get to know one another and practice. The group became One Direction and they performed an acoustic version of "Torn". The band came in third place on the show.
In his time with One Direction, Payne was credited for co-writing over half of the songs on the band's third and fourth album, as well as other songs on previous albums and Made in the A.M.. He began working as a producer under the names "Big Payno" or "Payno" and remixed You & I and Steal My Girl in 2014 and Drag Me Down in 2015 as well as Cheryl's I Don't Care.
On New Years 2018, Payne dedicated an Instagram post and tweet to his band mates, including Zayn Malik. The picture was of Payne accepting a Brit Award that One Direction won in 2017 with the caption "Last and final memory of this year is going up and accepting the Brit award on behalf of my band knowing we've still got it! Happy new year everybody!".
Since the group's hiatus and former bandmate Zayn Malik's depature in 2015, Payne released his debut single, Strip That Down on May 19, 2017. It features American rapper Quavo, from the hip hop group, Migos. The song charted in the top five on charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland and reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. It became Payne's first top ten hit as a solo artist, making him the third member of One Direction to have a top ten hit, following Zayn Malik and Harry Styles. He became the first solo artist from an all-male vocal group to have a single reach number one on the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart on the November 4, 2017 issue.
Payne succeeded his debut hit with a collaboration with Russian-German DJ, Zedd on July 6, 2017. Although charting lower than Payne's debut, Get Low, received positive reviews by critics from Billboard, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and other magazines and writers. Zedd stated that "without Liam, I might've never finished this song. He really pulled it towards a direction that I would not have, and I love where it is."
The second single to Payne's upcoming debut album, Bedroom Floor, was released on October 20, 2017. It is his first song that doesn't feature any other artists. Payne's vocals on the track were compared by some of his fans and critics to Malik's, "boasting some nice falsetto muscle" and regarded the song as "a significant improvement over his debut Strip That Down". Payne's girlfriend and singer, Cheryl commented that the song was her favorite of his.
A collaboration with American singer Rita Ora, titled For You is expected to be released in January 2018 as part of the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. Payne teased the track on his Instagram on December 22, 2017.
