Liam James Payne was born on August 29, 1993 to Geoff Payne and Karen Payne in Wolverhampton, U.K. His father was a fitter and mother a nursery nurse. He is the younger brother to Nicola and Ruth Payne. Payne had to regular visits and tests done in the hospital until he was age four as doctors recognized that one of his kidneys was scarred and dysfunctional. To manage the pain, he received thirty-two injections every morning and night as a child.
Payne was heavily involved in sports and joined the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club as a student to pursue a running career. After failing to make it to the English National Team for the 2012 Olympic Games, he was placed on the reserves list. Due to bulling in secondary school, Payne took up boxing lessons when he was twelve. He studied music technology at Wolverhampton College's Paget Road campus after completing eleven GCSEs at St Peter's Collegiate School.
Payne originally auditioned on The X Factor in 2008 when he was only fourteen years old and performed Frank Sinatra's Fly Me To The Moon. He was cut during the judges' houses, but was encouraged by Simon Cowell to come back to years later. Payne did audition again in 2010 with Michael Bublé's version of Cry Me a River. He failed to move on to the Boys category at judges' house along with four others. Nicole Scherzinger then suggested to put them together to form a five-piece boy band and qualify for the Groups category. The group got together and were given two weeks to get to know one another and practice. The group became One Direction and they performed an acoustic version of "Torn". The band came in third place on the show.
In his time with One Direction, Payne was credited for co-writing over half of the songs on the band's third and fourth album, as well as other songs on previous albums and Made in the A.M.. He began working as a producer under the names "Big Payno" or "Payno" and remixed You & I and Steal My Girl in 2014 and Drag Me Down in 2015 as well as Cheryl's I Don't Care. Since the group's hiatus and former bandmate Zayn Malik's depature in 2015, Payne released his debut single, Strip That Down on May 19, 2017.

They reconnected again in 2013 at a friend's birthday party and in August Liam flew out Sophia to join him on part of the Take Me Home Tour.Payne announced the relationship in the This Is Us press conference and the couple made their first appearance together at the premiere of One Direction's concert film, This Is Us. Having co-written several songs for One Direction, Payne confirmed Illusion from their fourth album, Four was about his relationship with Smith. In October 2015, it was reported that the couple had broken up because of so much time apart due to touring.
Cheryl (born June 30, 1983) is the current girlfriend of Liam Payne. The English singer and dancer first met with Payne back in 2008 when Payne auditioned on The X Factor for the first time. They met again in 2010 after Payne's second audition. In 2014, the then One Direction member wrote a song called I Won't Break for Cheryl's album, Only Human.
Fans speculated the pair to be dating after Payne posted a picture of a rose on his Instagram on Valentines Day in 2016 with the caption "Happy Valentine's Day baby ...". Ten days later, flirty messages were exchanged between them before they attended the 2016 Brit Awards separately. Only a day after, Payne deleted pictures of his ex-girlfriend, Sophia Smith from his Instagram. The couple were confirmed to be dating on February 27. The relationship was confirmed by Payne changing his Instagram display picture to a selfie of him and Cheryl and changing his bio to "Happy". In late 2016 it was speculated that Cheryl was pregnant, which was confirmed in February the following year as Cheryl appeared in a beauty campaign that showed off her bump. On March 22, 2017, Payne and Cheryl welcomed their baby boy, Bear Payne.
