Shenanigans features B-sides, rarities and covers prior to the band's American Idiot era. It features a previously unreleased song titled Ha Ha You're Dead and a spy-themed instrumental, Espionage. Upon its release, it peaked at number twenty-seven on the Billboard Hot 200 chart.
The original cover does not feature a title, which caused a lot of confusion that was fixed when retailers designed a small logo on a sticker that was plastered on the front of the album.
A song called D.U.I. (Driving Under the Influence), which was written by Tré Cool was supposed to go in between tracks nine and ten (Tired of Waiting for You and Sick of Me). In the album booklet's track listing, all of the song's information except for its title, is covered by a large spot of spray paint. In 2006, Mike Dirnt joked that it was removed because it was filled with great advice and Billie Joe Armstrong said that he likes irresponsibility, but not that much irresponsibility.
D.U.I. is only featured on unmastered, promotional versions of Shenanigans. It is listed as the seventh track and is 1:50 long. It is falsely said to be on the Japanese version of the album on Green Day's website.
